Ilocano Pens @ Mag:net Cafe

OMG! Members and officers of GUMIL Filipinas (GF), the country's biggest Ilocano Writers' Association with chapters overseas, were the featured artists in the August edition of the Open Mic Gig (OMG!), a monthly literary performance, at Rock Drilon's Mag:net Gallery in Katipunan, QuezonCity.

Veteran writers Juan S.P. Hidalgo, Jr., Dr. Paul Blanco Zafaralla, GF President Elizabeth Raquel, GF Past President Honor Blanco Cabie, GF Past President Dionisio Bulong, GUMIL Metro Manila President Judge Baclig, Ric Agnes, Linda Bulong, Aida C. Tiama, Jovito F. Amorin, Benn Cabacungan, Leo S. Fagaragan, Simeon Berroy, Ma. Rose Cabie, Rodie Taan, Avelina Fe Camacho, and Rudy Contillo performed live on August 30.

They were joined by younger writers including Ariel S.Tabag and Sherma E. Benosa, both officers of GUMIL Filipinas, and Mighty C. Rasing. Also present was the adopted daughter of GUMIL: Dr. Zita Fagaragan, a Cebuana writer who have actively promoted and supported GUMIL projects.

Hidalgo is a recipient of Gawad CCP for Literature, while Agnes is this year's recipient of UMPIL's Gawad Balagtas for Ilocano fiction and drama.

The group performed various poetry forms in Ilocano, including dallot, pangorona a daniw (coronation poetry), daniw a para radio (poetry forradio), daniw a para ubbing (poetry for children), daniw iti parparaangan, danirak, bitniw, and Duata.

Dallot is an Ilocano poetry form that narrates a folklore or epic, such as "Biag ni Lam-ang." This form is also used in pamamanhikan. Duata, meaning “you and I,” on the other hand, is a dedicated eight-liner created by Bert Ugalino of Hawaii, meant to be a shared-reading for two.

Bitniw or bitla a daniw (or tulampati, or tulang talumpati) was initiated by GUMIL Metro Manila President, Judge Vivencio Baclig who delivered his speech in poetry form. Finally, danirak, or daniw a rock or rock poetry, is a new poetry form created and performed by young writers Ariel S. Tabag and Mighty C. Rasing together with their group, the Samtoy band.

Besides different poetry forms, Ilocano songs and Itneg songs were also showcased. Honor Cabie likewise took the opportunity to promote his new book of sonnets, called Rhymes and Roses.

The poetry reading at Mag:net Café is the first time ever in the history of GUMIL Filipinas. But it certainly is not the last. Starting September, GUMIL will become mainstays at the Conspiracy Garden Café located at 59 Visayas Ave., Project 6, Quezon City.

The Mag:net Café gig and the upcoming Conspiracy gigs are in coordination with UMPIL Chair, Vim Nadera.

Watch out for announcements of upcoming gigs. See you there!
