The Ilokano Youth Book Project
CONCEPT AND GUIDELINES
With Samtoy Books as publisher, the project will meet the following objectives:
a) Amplify the voice of the Ilocano youth.
b) Celebrate the joy in writing.
1. Writers must be Ilokanos 25 years old and below (at the time of publication, February 2, 2013), residing in Ilocos Norte. So long as their permanent address is in Ilocos Norte, those working or studying outside the province may also contribute. Ilocos Norte natives who have lived overseas for not more than five years may also contribute.
2. The personal essays will revolve on the life and times of the Ilokano youth. All topics are welcome, so long as they reflect: 1) the Ilocano and 2) the youth in our time. The essays do not have to explicitly tackle Ilocano culture and lifestyle. Ilokanoness and youthfulness must be reflected without doing hard sell.
3. Length of contributions must be between 800 and 1500 words.
4. Essays may be in English, Filipino, or Ilokano. Ideally, 70% of the essays in the collection will be in English, 20% in Filipino, and 10% in Ilokano. Depending on the submissions, the ratio may still be changed.
5. The submissions, which must be original works of the writers, must not have been previously published. Essays which have appeared in campus papers may be accepted, but must be re-crafted, if necessary, to meet the requirements of the book.
6. A writer may contribute a maximum of three essays for consideration, but only one essay per writer may be included in the collection.
7. A total of thirty essays will be included in the project. Essays will be selected based on content, relevance to the project’s theme / concept, originality and craftsmanship, and human interest.
8. All submissions must be computerized (Microsoft Word file, .doc; 8 ½” x 11” bond paper; Font: Times New Roman, Size 12; double-spaced; one-inch margin on all sides; with their page numbers as footers i.e. page 1 of 5 and so on).
9. The book will be edited by Herdy La. Yumul and Luvee Hazel Calventas-Aquino. Entries must be sent to herdiology@yahoo.com and luvee.hazel@gmail.com. cc: ilocanoyouthbook@yahoo.com. Senders will receive an acknowledgement e-mail from the editors upon receipt of the submitted essays.
10. All submissions must include a short biographical sketch (150-200 words) of the author. It should also bear the author’s contact information, including residential address, contact number and email address.
11. Deadline for submissions is on October 30, 2012. Target date of book launch is December first week.
12. For inquiries, please contact 09297793969 or 09175482775 or email the editors.
