Terra Nuova/pensiEVE

Boston Gallery will be featuring two simultaneous solo exhibitions from July 11 to 31, 2009: Terra Nouva, a collection of recent semi-abstract landscapes gy Erwin Leano (Upper Gallery) and pensiEVE, Ninel Constantino’s second one-woman show of figurative paintings in oil on canvas (Lower Gallery). Terra Nouva unveils Erwin Leano’s recent landscapes in oil on canvas: desolate and uninhabited territories that veer towards abstraction in their representations of land and sky. Leano’s palette remains colored yet muted: capturing the nuances of dusk and dawn in uncharted land. This is a progression of his works from the artist’s last solo show. pensiEVE, Ninel Constantino’s secod one-woman exhibition, is a collection of figurative, almost illustrative paintings serving as an “ode to young women’s memories”, as the artist puts it. Terra Nouva and pensiEVE will run up to the 31st of July at Boston Gallery, #72 Lantana Street, Cubao, Quezon City. For inquiries, contact the gallery at 722-9205.

Lapus scraps bilingual education

By Gigi Muñoz David Manila Standard Education Secretary Jesli Lapus has signed Department of Education Order 74 nullifying the 35-year-old bilingual directive laid down in the 1970s on English and Filipino as the only languages of instruction. Neither of the languages is the first language (L1) of most Filipinos. Lapus said findings of various local initiatives and international studies in basic education have validated the superiority of the use of the learner’s mother tongue or L1 in improving learning outcomes and promoting Education For All. He added the Order 74 institutionalizes the use of mother tongue as a fundamental educational policy and program in the department in the whole stretch of formal education including preschool and in the Alternative Learning System. The policy widely referred to as mother tongue-based multilingual education aims to improve learning outcomes and promote EFA. Lapus cited findings from international and local research such as learners acquire readi...

Use mother tongue to improve learning--Lapus

The use of the mother tongue as primary medium of instruction from pre-school up to at least grade three is now a Department of Education policy, Secretary Jesli A. Lapus announced last July 14. DEP-ED Order No. 74, series of 2009, nullifies the 35-year old bilingual directive laid down in the 1970s on English and Filipino as the only languages of instruction. Neither English nor Filipino is the first language (L1) of most Filipinos. The historic policy widely referred to as mother tongue-based multilingual education (MLE) aims to improve learning outcomes and promote Education for All (EFA), Lapus said. Citing findings from international and local research, he stated that:  Learners acquire reading skills more easily in their first language (L1) than in a second language (L2);  Pupils who start to speak, read and write in their L1 learn an L2, like English, more quickly than those exclusively taught in an L2.  Learners develop cognitive, linguistic and academic competenci...

New Filipino publication in Spanish launched

Perro Berde , the only cultural Philippine magazine in Spanish at present, was recently launched at the Instituto Cervantes in Manila. The magazine was initiated by a group of Filipino and Spanish writers residing in Manila. In addition to Spanish, the magazine is written in Filipino and in some 16 languages spoken in the Philippines. The first issue of Perro Berde features the illustrations of Spanish artist Cesar Caballero, as well as major contemporary Filipino writers such as Bienvenido Lumbera, Marjorie Evasco, Marra Lanot, Joi Barrios, Roland Tolentino, Francis Macansantos, and Sid Hildawa. A special tribute is rendered in the magazine to the latter, who passed away in 2008, in the first ever publication of Spanish translations of his p...
